How to Change Wax Melts and Clean Your Warmer
Change wax melts by switching off the warmer, following its approved wax-removal method, and cleaning the dish as the manufacturer directs. Don’t pry at hardened wax with a knife, pour wax down a drain, or assume every removable dish can be treated the same way.
The best method depends on the warmer. A flexible insert, a removable ceramic dish, and a fixed dish may need different care. Start with the instructions for the model you actually own.
Decide whether it’s time for a change
You may want fresh wax because the fragrance has faded or simply because you’d like a different scent. Wax can remain in the dish even when little useful fragrance remains.
Avoid topping up an old portion repeatedly. Removing the previous wax gives you a clearer idea of how the next fragrance smells and keeps you within the dish’s intended capacity.
If you are changing because of unusual residue, damaged equipment, or a smell that suggests the appliance is malfunctioning, stop using it and ask the manufacturer for guidance.
Switch off before you begin
For an electric warmer, turn it off and unplug it as directed before cleaning. If your device uses a tea light, extinguish it and follow the warmer’s cooling instructions.
Keep children and pets away from the work area. Do not carry a warmer or dish full of hot liquid wax across the room. Set up your cleaning materials before you begin rather than trying to find them while holding something warm.
Read the removal directions carefully: some approved methods require fully hardened wax, while others specify a warm-but-not-hot stage. That detail belongs to the device’s instructions, not a universal online shortcut.
Use only a method approved for your dish
If the manufacturer supplies a removable liner or flexible dish, use it exactly as directed. For a conventional dish, consult the manufacturer’s cleaning guide before applying pressure, heat, water, or cleaning products.
Check which parts your manual allows you to remove and how it tells you to clean them. A method that works for someone else’s warmer may not suit yours.
Avoid sharp tools and abrasive scrubbing. Don’t put an electrical base in water. Unless your specific manual allows it, don’t place a dish in the freezer, dishwasher, microwave, or oven to loosen the wax.
Dispose of the wax without involving the plumbing
Keep removed wax contained, let it cool and harden, and dispose of it according to local waste guidance. Wax belongs out of sinks, toilets, and other drains.
If your approved cleaning method uses a disposable absorbent material, handle and discard it as directed after it has cooled. Don’t leave warm wax-soaked material where it can contact a flame or hot equipment.
Use only cleaning products permitted by the manufacturer. A strong solvent or fragranced cleaner can create a new problem when all you wanted was a fresh scent.
Inspect, dry, and start fresh
Before reassembly, check the dish for damage and make sure any permitted washing has been followed by complete drying. Refit the correct parts and return the warmer to its approved location.
