FRAN C FARMS Black Moss soy candle

Why Does a Soy Candle Tunnel, and How Do You Prevent It?

Candle tunneling is easy to recognize: the center burns downward while a wall or ring of unused wax remains around the sides. Instead of the wax surface melting evenly, the candle begins creating a narrow path around the wick.

Why does it happen?

One common contributor is repeated short burn sessions, especially early in the candle’s life. If the candle is extinguished before the melt pool has had an appropriate opportunity to expand, the next burn may follow the narrower melted area.

The first burn matters

On the first use, allow the candle to burn long enough for the melt pool to develop appropriately across the surface, provided you remain within the candle’s safe burn instructions. Do not ignore a maximum burn time just to force wax to the edge.

Wick and candle construction matter too

Not every tunneling problem is caused by the customer. Wick sizing, vessel diameter, wax formulation and construction all influence melt behavior. A properly designed candle should pair these components intentionally.

Drafts can interfere

Airflow can push a flame and create uneven heating. Burn the candle away from fans, vents and open windows.

Keep the wick maintained

Follow the candle’s trimming instructions. An uncontrolled wick does not improve the situation and may create additional performance or safety issues.

What if tunneling has already started?

Do not improvise unsafe internet “hacks” involving flammable materials or altered candle construction. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the product. If a candle appears defective or behaves unsafely, stop burning it and contact the seller.

Prevention is easier than correction

The simplest plan is good candle care from the beginning: appropriate first burn, sensible burn sessions, maintained wick, stable surface, and no drafts.

A candle should be relaxing, not a repair project. Treat the first few burns as part of owning the candle well and you give it the best chance to use its wax evenly.
